action

Wilfred Simpson works as a clerk at a train station and is engaged to Phyllis Jenkins. Wilfred and Phyllis meet the art cyclist Harry St. Clair, who wants to pick up his bikes from the train station. Wilfred takes care of the bikes while Harry brings Phyllis home. This annoys Wilfred, who whistles to Harry at his performance the next evening. Harry challenges Wilfred to do better, Wilfred accepts the duel. Again Harry brings Phyllis home, which makes his assistant Mabel jealous. She tells Wilfred that Harry wants to marry Phyllis. Wilfred follows them around town and finds them on Phyllis' porch. Phyllis is so shocked by Wilfred's demeanor that she ends the engagement without further ado. Wilfred swears to leave town.

Wilfred bumps into Clinton Hemmings on the street. Clinton wants to take part in a six-day race in town, and Wilfred becomes his partner. He also works for a delivery service. He gets the order to deliver a menu to Harry at the hotel. Wilfred is convinced that the woman in Harry's hotel room is Phyllis and knocks Harry down. It turns out that the woman is Mabel who is Harry's wife. Wilfred is arrested, but Phyllis is able to buy him out on bail, so that he reaches the race at the last minute. The race turns into a duel between Wilfred and Harry. Wilfred and Clinton can win the event. Wilfred and Phyllis later marry and have a son.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films describes the work as “a comedy enriched with plenty of silent film slapstick about the largely forgotten comedian Joe E. Brown in one of his best films. Undemanding, but enjoyable entertainment. ”The TV Guide found that the script was filled with gags from the silent era of short films. The film is too long and too predictable for that. Maxine Doyle's part is uninteresting and a pure time filler.
