Arthur Aylesworth

Arthur Preston Aylesworth (born August 12, 1883 in Apponaug , Rhode Island , USA , † June 26, 1946 in Los Angeles , California , USA) was an American actor . He also performed under the name Arthur Aylsworth .

life and work

Arthur Aylesworth was born into a military family. His grandfather and father had graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point . He himself was there for two years, but then turned to acting. In the 1910s and 1920s he was active in vaudeville , but above all in the theater. He had his first appearance on Broadway in 1911 in the play Over Night by Philip Bartholomae and produced by William A. Brady . When William A. Brady filmed this play in 1915, Arthur Aylesworth starred. This was his first and only film for several years. Instead, he stayed with the theater. The Internet Broadway Database listed 16 productions with him by 1933 (and another one with Yankee Point in 1942 ). These include Kiss Me Quick, a 1913 production in which he appeared with his wife Sadie Harris, whom he married on June 20, 1912.

Arthur Aylesworth only came to the cinema in the early 1930s. In 1934 he got a contract with Warner Bros. He could only be seen in supporting roles, often uncredited . In the period from 1934 to his death in 1946, he had over 130 roles. He worked under many of the most renowned Hollywood directors of his time such as Michael Curtiz ( The Key , British Agent , Murder in the Nightclub , Law of the Mountains , Golden Earth California , Land of the Wicked ), John Ford ( The young Mr. Lincoln , drumming on the Mohawk , Fruits of Wrath ), William Dieterle ( The Secret Bride , The Life of Emile Zola , Blockade ), William A. Wellman ( Gold Fever in Alaska , Three Foreign Legionnaires , Roxie Hart , Buffalo Bill, the White Indian ), Henry Hathaway ( Pirates in Alaska , Trek to Utah , At home in Indiana ), William Wyler ( The Westerner ), Raoul Walsh ( Decision in the Sierra ), Fritz Lang ( Raid of the Ogalalla , night in the harbor ), Howard Hawks ( Sergeant York ) or Norman Taurog ( The Big Broadcast of 1936 , Fifty Roads to Town , Tom’s Adventure , Teufelskerle , The Girl Downstairs ). His last film was White Oleander by Joseph L. Mankiewicz .

Arthur Aylesworth was married to actress Sadie Harris from 1912 until her death in 1933. He died in 1946 and was buried in the Chapel of the Pines Crematory .

Arthur Aylesworth was dubbed by Karl-Maria Steffens , Erich Ebert , Harald Leipnitz and Herbert Weicker, among others .
