Norbert Fürstenhofer

Norbert Fürstenhofer (born August 16, 1945 in Vienna ) is an officer in the Austrian Armed Forces , most recently in the rank of brigadier . Most recently he was in command of the NBC defense school . In 2010 he retired .

Military career

Norbert Fürstenhofer completed his officer training at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt from 1966 to 1969 . From 1970 to 1975 he exercised training and commanding functions at the former air raid protection school (now NBC defense school), first in the Archduke Wilhelm barracks , later in the Dab barracks in Korneuburg. After a period of training at the National Defense Academy in Vienna, he served as commander of the 2nd company of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force Austrian Battalion from 1976 to 1977 . From 1978 to 1988 he was active in various functions in the army command, since 1984 as an NBC defense officer. In this role, Fürstenhofer was also responsible for the assistance deployment after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster . In 1988 he became the commandant of the NBC defense school in Korneuburg, which has been named after Lise Meitner since 2007. In the same year he was the head of the earthquake relief operation in Armenia. Based on this experience, he founded the Austrian Forces Disaster Relief Unit (AFDRU), the international disaster relief element of the Federal Armed Forces, with which he has performed numerous missions. In 2003 he became NBC defense chief of the armed forces, in 2010 he retired and has since acted as a disaster control trainer at various international military academies around the world.

Protection of cultural property

In 2008, Fürstenhofer also took over the office of President of the Austrian Society for the Protection of Cultural Property and was thus a member of the board of the Austrian National Committee Blue Shield .
