Norbert Hofmann (clergyman)

Norbert Johannes Hofmann SDB (* 1959 in Ebermannstadt ) is a German religious priest and Roman Catholic diplomat who works in the curia as secretary of the Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations with Judaism .

Life

After graduating from high school in Franconian Switzerland in Ebermannstadt , Hofmann entered the novitiate of the Salesians Don Bosco in Jünkerath in 1979 . After his first profession the following year, he studied social pedagogy and theology in Benediktbeuern . After completing his studies, he initially worked in boarding school education, but also in pastoral care and educational work. In 1990 he was ordained a priest , immediately afterwards he worked as boarding school prefect in the Beromünster branch .

After further studies in Lucerne , Zurich and Rome , he did his doctorate on a biblical topic. As a result, he was lecturer for the Old Testament at the Philosophical-Theological University in Benediktbeuern for two years .

After specializing in early Jewish writings, but also studying the Holy Land and today's Judaism well, he was appointed "Secretary of the Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews" on December 1, 2002. He was initially assigned to the German Curia Cardinal Walter Kasper , then from 2012 Curia Cardinal Kurt Koch , who acted as President of this commission.

Appreciation

On October 5th, 2009, he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon from Federal President Horst Köhler . His contribution to improving relations between the Catholic Church and Judaism was recognized by Jewish authorities.
