Norbert Schlesinger

Norbert Schlesinger (born June 6, 1908 in Munich ; † March 2, 1980 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect and designer .

Life

Norbert Schlesinger was born as the son of the North Bohemian builder Franz Schlesinger. In his childhood and youth, he often changed schools because his father moved several times. In 1928 he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna as a student to become an architect. He graduated with distinction in 1931.

After a long study trip, Schlesinger and his fellow student Rudolf Baumfeld shared an office and settled in Vienna as an architect . As early as 1936, the office community dissolved again after smaller orders. Schlesinger then went to the National Socialist German Reich , where he had better opportunities as part of the armament of the Wehrmacht .

From 1936 to 1938 he was involved in the establishment of the Heinkel-Werke Oranienburg . From 1938 to 1940 he planned parts of Volkswagenstadt, later Wolfsburg . From 1941 he worked in Brno for the aero engine works Ostmark and erected various buildings there. He also worked again for Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke when he was planning a design office in Schwechat .

After the end of the Second World War , he settled in Vienna again, where, in addition to many private assignments, he also carried out some public assignments. So he built the federal gendarmerie building in Amstetten , the secondary school in Grundsteingasse 48 in Vienna and the office building and the Babenbergerhalle in Klosterneuburg . He also worked as a furniture designer . He did not receive Austrian citizenship until 1950 , having been Czech by birth and then German .

From 1959 to 1979 he taught at the University of Applied Arts Vienna .
