Location of Nordburg in Lower Saxony

Nordburg is a district of the municipality Wienhausen in the Lower Saxony district of Celle .

geography

Nordburg is located southeast of the city of Celle and east of the core area Wienhausen in the southeast of the district of Celle. The place is near the Aller on the river Schwarzwasser .

history

Nordburg was first mentioned in history around 1200, when the three sons of Henry the Lion shared his inheritance. The Count Palatine Heinrich received Celle and “Nortburg”, among other severance payments . But the area around Nordburg gained importance even earlier. Around 900 the bishop of Hildesheim had a castle built near Wahrenholz and Müden an der Aller to protect against the Wends . In gratitude, he acquired the district of Flutwidde and Gretinge , which until then had belonged to Duke Bruno . In the following years there was increasing enmity between the duke and the bishop and Nordburg gained importance as a castle. They are located in the village's present cemetery.

On August 12, 1215, "Giselbertus, sacerdos de Nortborch" was named as a witness for the separation of the chapel in Bröckel from the mother church in Wienhausen . In the 14th and 15th centuries, a branch of the von Hodenberg family is said to have resided at the castle. For reasons of succession, the Schwachhausen estate fell to the last surviving von Hodenberg fief in 1608 . His daughter married the south German Schenk von Winterstedt , who later became landlord of the Nordburg farmers. Around 1850 the chapel that stood in the place of the castle in the cemetery was demolished. Later a simple bell tower was built on the old foundations.

In April 1945 Nordburg was liberated by the 1st Battalion of the 333rd Regiment of the US Army. At that time there were still about 100 SS soldiers in the village, who retreated to the northeast after a short battle.

On January 1, 1973, Nordburg was incorporated into the municipality of Wienhausen.
