The submarine was developed by Thorsten Nordenfelt with the help of Reverend George Garrett. It was built by Bolinders in Stockholm from 1884 to 1885 and launched in 1885. The spindle-shaped submarine was 19.50 m long and weighed 56 t. It was propelled by a 100 hp steam engine via a four- bladed propeller and reached a maximum surface speed of 9 knots . It had two steam storage tanks for underwater travel . Excess steam could be stored here in the surface, which could be used for the drive in the submerged condition. This supply lasted for up to five hours at a speed of 3 knots. For combat, the Nordenfelt I had a Nordenfelt machine gun of 25.4 mm caliber, which was installed in front of the funnel, as well as a torpedo tube with a Whitehead torpedo.
In September 1885 Greece took over the submarine for a price of 9,000 lire and transferred it to the Salamis naval base . In April 1886 test drives were made. However, the Nordenfelt I failed and was never used by the Navy. In 1901 it was finally scrapped .
