The North Rhine-Westphalia was laid on October 24, 2012 in cooperation between ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and the Lürssen shipyard group in Bremen . The ceremonial christening took place on April 16, 2015 in Hamburg by the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft . The predecessor ship in the sponsorship of North Rhine-Westphalia is the destroyer Mölders, which was decommissioned in 2003 . The commissioning and handover to the 4th frigate squadron took place on June 10, 2020 in Wilhelmshaven. On July 4, 2016, frigate captain Stefan Schulz was given command of the “Charlie” class of the F 125 class.

From January 27 to February 4, 2017, North Rhine-Westphalia carried out the first shipyard test run. On September 1, 2017, the frigate moved for the first time from the shipyard to the home port at the Wilhelmshaven naval base. On July 24, 2019, there was an accident in which a crane from a civil company damaged the antenna mast of the frigate. On March 5, 2020, the frigate was handed over to the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr and was officially put into service on June 10, 2020 in the presence of the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Armin Laschet .
