Rheinstahl

The Nordseewerke bulk carrier 17,100 tdw was a type of bulk carrier of the Emden Nordseewerke . It was built in six units in 1958 and 1959.

history

In the 1950s, the rapidly growing German economy created an increasing demand for raw materials. This included, among other things, the supply of ore to the steel works in the Ruhr area. In the beginning , ore imports were mainly transported with multi-purpose general cargo ships, which were suitable for both the export of general cargo and the import of bulk goods such as ore. The Nordseewerke in Emden had already gained initial experience in the construction of ore freighters before the war and built the successful Emden type in the post-war years from 1951 to 1957 . With the 17,100 tdw bulk carrier, the shipyard constructed a significantly more modern ship design with aft superstructures at the end of the 1950s, an arrangement that has been preserved for comparable ships to this day. On September 9, 1958, the Emden shipyard delivered the type ship Rheinstahl to its clients. By the end of 1959, five more new buildings of the type with a load capacity of around 17,000 tons followed.

Two of the orders received, the yard of the Rheinische Stahlwerke in Essen, another of the August Thyssen-Hütte and one from the Seereederei Frigga the four ships, Fleet operated . There were also two ships that were ordered by Norwegian shipping companies. The Rheinstahl , Arenberg and Otto Springorum were sold to the Indian shipping company Dempo Steam Ship Limited in Bombay in 1969/70, the other ships served various second owners.

The ships in the series had very different careers in the decades that followed. Two were scrapped in 1978 (the former Arenberg after it had caught fire for the second time on board). The Betty ran aground and sank off Brazil in 1980. The type ship Rheinstahl was demolished in South Korea in 1984, while the Essi Flora , which was converted into a chemical tanker in 1964 , remained in service until 1996. One of the ships sold to India, the former Otto Springorum , was converted into the ore loading and depot ship Priyamvada in Bremerhaven in 1982 and was used in this function until 2015. She commuted between the Indian ore export port of Mormugao and Panaji .

technology

The basic design of the ships with aft superstructures and machinery, as well as without loading gear , was fundamentally different from contemporary cargo ships. The ships, around 161 meters long and 20.20 meters wide on frames , had nine self-trimming holds with a bulk cargo volume of 22,395 m 3 . The hatches were closed with MacGregor folding hatch covers. Only every second space was loaded for the ore journey , whereas all cargo spaces were used for loads with a large stowage factor . The ships had a tank capacity of 5583 tonnes for any ballast travel. Lateral high tanks were provided to improve the sea properties. Main engines with around 5400 hp allowed a speed of 13.8 knots .
