Norishige Kanai ( Japanese 金井 宣 茂 , Kanai Norishige ; born December 1976 in Tokyo Prefecture , grew up in Chiba Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese doctor and spaceman .

Education and professional career

Kanai graduated from Tōhō High School in Narashino in 1995 . In March 2002 he was appointed officer of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces after graduating from the Bōei Ika Daigaku (Military College of Medicine) as a doctor. He then worked as a surgeon and diving doctor at the university's hospital, at the clinics of the Ōminato naval bases in Mutsu and Kure , and in the medical service of the Dai-ichi Jukka Gakkō (1st technical school) of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces.

Astronaut activity

In 2009 he was selected with two other candidates to do research as a Japanese astronaut on the International Space Station . From September 2009 to July 2011 he was in special training at NASA for the space flight to the ISS, with increased training on the equipment and the experiments of the Japanese module Kibo .

NEEMO-20

In July / August 2015 he was a crew member of the NEEMO-20 mission, an underwater research habitat of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) off the coast of Florida, where he worked for 14 days.

Soyuz MS-07

In August 2015 Kanai was nominated for a long stay aboard the ISS. On December 17, 2017, he set off for the ISS with the Soyuz MS-07 together with the Russian commander Anton Schkaplerow and the American astronaut Scott Tingle . There he worked as a flight engineer for ISS expeditions 54 and 55 until June 2018 .

Private

Kanai's hobbies are Japanese martial arts such as aikido, as well as scuba diving and traveling . He is a member of the Japanese Surgical Society and the Japanese Society for Hyperbaric and Diving Medicine .
