Norman Coles Bailey (born July 23, 1857 in Streatham , London , † January 13, 1923 in Cowley ) was an English football player of the late 19th century .

Player career

society

Bailey began playing football for his school's team, Westminster School. He then played as a defender for Old Westminster , Clapham Rovers , Wanderers FC , Swifts FC and Corinthian FC, as well as for representative selections from London and Surrey .

With the Clapham Rovers he reached the FA Cup finals twice , in 1879 he lost 1-0 to Old Etonians, and a year later he won 1-0 against Oxford University.

National team

Bailey played 19 times for England, a very high number of internationals for the time. He played all games against Scotland , Wales or Ireland , as there were no non-British national teams at that time. He was the first English player to break the 10-game barrier.

It is interesting that his debut as well as his first of 15 games as team captain and his last international match all ended in defeats against Scotland (2: 7, 1: 6, 2: 3).

His only goal for the national team came in a 4-0 win over Wales . Some sources also state that Bailey scored in a 5-4 comeback against Scotland (1: 4 break), but officially the goal is considered an own goal by Scottish goalkeeper Robert Parlane. With Bailey in the formation, England won and lost eight games, three of which ended in a draw.

After football

Already parallel to and after his football career, he worked as a lawyer , which enabled him to remain an amateur player throughout his career without running into financial problems.

He worked from 1882 to 1884 for the Football Association , of which he was vice president from 1887 to 1890.
