Norman W. Walker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Norman W. Walker (born January 4, 1886 in Genoa , † June 6, 1985 in Cottonwood , Arizona ) was an American businessman and author who is considered to be the co-founder of the natural hygiene movement in the United States, the raw food and Sees fruit and vegetable juices as optimal nutrition for humans. Walker designed its own juicer , which is commercially available under the name Norwalk Hydraulic Press Juicer . Many incorrect ages are circulating about Walker; most of the time his age at death is given as well over 100 years, often 119 years is given. However, his date of birth is officially documented and is also on his tombstone; he died at the age of 99.

biography

Walker was born in Genoa, Italy in 1886 to British parents. In October 1910 he emigrated from England to the USA. He lived in New York for a while . He later opened a juice bar with delivery service in Long Beach , California , convinced of the health benefits of fresh juices. In his opinion, they have a bowel cleansing effect and can thus prevent diseases. Since only freshly squeezed juice has this effect, Walker designed his own juicing model. After the San Francisco health authorities banned the sale of unpasteurized vegetable juice, he began manufacturing juicers in Anaheim .

In the late 1940s, Walker moved to St. George , Utah , where he and a business partner wanted to continue the production of juicers in a former mill. After another conflict with the health authorities, he sold his stake in the company to his business partner and began to publish his own health magazine, The New Health Movement Review . He also ran his own health farm in Arizona for several years before focusing on writing books on health. Some of his books state on the cover that he studied medicine, but without specifying the institute or university from which he received his doctorate.

Theories

Walker recommended a raw vegan diet made from vegetables , fruits, and nuts . He described heat-treated foods as "dead" and unhealthy. He refused to eat meat , fish , eggs and dairy products , as well as bread , pasta and rice . Drinking water and mineral water are also harmful ; Instead, he recommended the water that is left over from the vegetables when the vegetables are pressed (i.e. vegetable juices) as a drink. However, it is important to use juicers, which remove almost all solid parts of the vegetables. As a rule, these are juicers, which press over two worm drives, remove the solid components separately and do not simply grate the vegetables and thus only chop the solid components so that they are still contained in the juice.

Walker considered the condition of the intestines and digestion to be essential for health . In his opinion, about 80 percent of all diseases come from the intestine. Above all, he saw constipation as a cause of illness: "(it is) the primary cause of nearly every disturbance of the human system" (Eng .: (constipation) is the main cause of almost every disturbance of the human organism). He assumed that irregular digestion would lead to contamination of the blood and thus to internal poisoning ( toxemia ). Such a process has not been scientifically proven. Walker saw pimples as a sign of such toxemia .

In his opinion, the consumption of dairy products has a harmful effect on health and can cause illness. Walker argues that nature intended the milk of the cow for the calf and not for another species. There is no animal that feeds on the milk of other species, only humans do (and have only done so for a few millennia). The components and proportions of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals in the cow's milk are precisely tailored to the calf and are therefore useless for humans. Walker points out that cow's milk contains 300% more casein than human breast milk. Casein is a protein that provides the body with essential, easily digestible amino acids in order to gain weight. A calf drinks cow's milk to double its weight in 6–8 weeks. Humans, on the other hand, only reach twice their weight in 6–7 months. Walker also mentions the phosphorus and sulfur ratio. Cow's milk contains 50% more phosphorus than human breast milk, and the ratio between sulfur and phosphorus is correct for the calf, but not for humans. The human organism has to exert too much effort to digest cow's milk. This results in poisonous slime formation. According to Walker, the consumption of milk and milk products is therefore not suitable for humans. It is said that colds , flu , asthma , bronchial ailments, tuberculosis , hay fever , pneumonia , skin diseases, sinus problems and arthritis are favored or intensified by milk . The calcium present in milk is bound to the protein casein and cannot be absorbed by the human digestive system. Another point made by Dr. Walker approached is the pasteurization of milk. According to Walker, this is solely for the profit of the milk producers. This is because the milk is heated, so that bacteria are killed that would make the milk sour. Walker opposes the argument that pasteurization kills coli, typhoid or tuberculosis bacteria. This is because temperatures of 90 to 110 ° C are required, which would probably not be reached during pasteurization. Walker, in his book "Fresh Salads Keep Your Health Healthy", reports that children of all ages, as well as adults, experienced "incredible health gains" when they removed milk from their diet. Colds would have subsided, as well as asthma, hay fever and other mucous conditions. Walker appeals to parents, especially mothers, to deal with the issue of milk consumption and not to expose their children to it during pregnancy or infancy. Rather, he recommends adequate breastfeeding of children and nutrition for the mother (and the child if it has outgrown infancy) with sufficient fruit and vegetables, which contain a lot of calcium and other important substances in sufficient quantities. The information on Walker's milk theory comes from the 3rd edition of 1993 of the book "Daily Fresh Salads Get Your Health" by Dr. Norman W. Walker, Copyright by Waldthausen Verlag.

The authors of the Fit for Life concept , which is also known in Germany, have adopted Walker's theories.
