Norske Løve (ship, 1765)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Norske Løve was a two-deck ship of the 3rd rank with 70 cannons of the Danish-Norwegian Navy.

Construction and technical data

The ship was built with hull number 35 by master shipbuilder FM Krabbe (1725–1796) at the Nyholm naval shipyard (now part of the Christianshavn district of Copenhagen ) as the second of three ships in its class. The two sister ships were the Prins Frederik, launched in 1764, and the Dronning Caroline Mathilde , launched in 1766 and renamed Øresund in 1772 . The keel was laid in May 1764, the launch on April 30, 1765, and the commissioning on October 10, 1767. The three-masted ship was 52 m long in the keel, was 14 m wide, and had a draft of 6.30 aft m (front 5.90 m). The armament consisted of 26 iron 24-pounders in the lower battery deck , 26 18-pounders in the upper battery deck and 18 8-pounders on the bow and stern forts . The combat crew consisted of 667 men.

career

The ship was mostly on watch duty in Øresund and other Danish waters, but also sailed several times with the fleet during summer maneuvers, in 1788 even as a squadron flagship. A general overhaul took place in 1779, with the latin sail on the mizzen mast being replaced by a gaff sail . In 1789, the ship secured Danish waters against Russian ships during the Swedish-Russian War (1788–1790).

From 1794 the now obsolete ship was in reserve in Nyholm. In 1795, after the great fire in Copenhagen, the masts and rigging were removed and the Hulk was used as a shelter for people made homeless by the fire. In 1798 the ship was finally retired.

Notes and individual references

  1. Named after Frederick of Denmark (1753–1805) , half-brother of King Christian VII of Denmark and Norway.
  2. The Dronning Caroline Mathilde was named after Caroline Mathilde , the wife of King Christian VII of Denmark and Norway, and was renamed in the course of the spectacular royal divorce process. The sometimes found claim that Norske Løve was renamed Øresund in 1772 is incorrect.
