The Northern Expedition is a RoPax ship operated by the Canadian shipping company BC Ferries from British Columbia . The ship is used on the " Inside Passage " route and connects Prince Rupert on the northern mainland coast with Port Hardy on Vancouver Island .

history

On August 18, 2006, BC Ferries commissioned the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft to build a replacement ship for the Queen of Prince Rupert (the shipyard had previously received an order to build three coastal class ferries ). Shortly thereafter, it was decided that the name of the new ship would be Northern Expedition and that BC Ferry's other ship operating in the north (the recently acquired Sonia to replace the sunken Queen of the North ) would be called Northern Adventure .

The ship, which is a “RO-PAX 600” ferry from the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, was built in 2008 at the shipyard in Flensburg with construction number 748. The keel was laid on May 16, the launch on September 25, 2008. The ship was delivered on January 29, 2009.

The ship of two driven MaK - marine diesel engines (MAK 9M 32C) with a capacity of in each case 4.500 kW , which each have a propeller effect. In addition, the ship is equipped with two bow thrusters with an output of 1,350 kW each and a stern thruster with an output of 900 kW. For trips in ice-covered waters, the ship has ice class 1A.

The ship left Germany on January 30, 2009 for British Columbia via the Panama Canal . The Northern Expedition completed the 9,900 nautical mile voyage on March 6, 2009, passing Victoria and Vancouver before arriving in Nanaimo for a follow-up inspection.

The Northern Expedition was first used on May 18, 2009 on the “Inside Passage” between Prince Rupert and Port Hardy.
