The Coastal class is a series of RoPax ships that were created on the basis of the RoPax 1600 - Double Ender ship design from the Flensburg Shipbuilding Society . The ships of the series were built in the period 2007 to 2008.

The ferries of the Coastal class is the most modern RoRo ships of the shipping company BC Ferries .

Tendering of the construction

The construction of the three ships was put out to tender worldwide. A total of 14 participants took part in the tender. Of the 14 offers, three were from Canada and the others from the United States and the rest of the world. The decision to build these ships outside of Canada was unpopular in British Columbia. The price was decisive for the success of the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft. The total purchase price of the three new vessels at the time of the award of the contract was approximately 325 million Canadian dollars ( CAD ) (September 2004). According to BC Ferries, this offer was 40 percent lower than what the cheapest Canadian shipyard offered. Another decisive factor was the willingness of the successful Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft to accept sometimes substantial contractual penalties for non-fulfillment of the contract.

Ships of the series

In this class, BC Ferries operates the three ferries Coastal Renaissance , Coastal Inspiration and Coastal Celebration . The names of the ships were determined in a competition in 2005: All three ships sail under the Canadian flag and have their home port of Victoria .

The Coastal Renaissance was built under construction number 733. The keel was laid on January 2nd and the launch on April 19th, 2007. The ship was delivered to BC Ferries on October 26th.

The Coastal Inspiration was built as the second ship in the series under hull number 734. The keel was laid on May 2nd and the launch on August 31st, 2007. The ship was delivered to BC Ferries on February 8, 2008.

The Coastal Celebration was built as the third ship in the series under hull number 735. The keel was laid on September 3rd and the launch on December 14th, 2007. The ship was delivered to BC Ferries on May 8, 2008.

The ships of this series replaced obsolete Victoria- class ships when they were put into service .
