Nothocestrum (in Hawaiian ʻAiea) is a genus of five to six species from the nightshade family. The genus is endemic to the Hawaiian archipelago.

description

The Nothocestrum species are shrubs or trees up to 15 meters high, the trunk diameter can reach up to 15 cm. The wood is soft and green.

The leaves, which are often arranged in pairs, are leathery or membrane-like; ovoid, ovoid-elliptical, ovoid-oblong or ovoid-heart-shaped; the tip of the leaf is pointed, blunt or slightly notched, the base is rounded or rarely shield-like; the leaf halves are partly unequal. They reach a size of (2.5) 5 to 10 (20) × (2) 5 to 10 (12.5) cm. The leaf stalks are (2) 8 to 20 (35) mm long.

The four-fold flowers are strikingly fragrant; on pedicels with a length of (3) 5 to 8 (18) mm; solitary, rarely in groups of two to three or on conspicuous short shoots in clusters of up to ten flowers. The bell-shaped, tubular or almost urn-shaped calyx is 8 to 12 (18) mm long; tomentose or hairy; unequal four-toothed two-four-toothed, four-lobed or almost two-lobed. The salver-shaped crown is greenish, greenish-yellow or yellow, (8) 10 to 13 (19) mm long and has four egg-shaped lobes. The silvery outer epidermis is initially provided with genus-specific upwardly directed multicellular, simple trichomes , which however soon disappear. The flower tube is no longer than the calyx or protrudes beyond the calyx. The four stamens are located within the flower or partially protrude, the anthers are sessile, dorsally fixed and 2.8 to 3.5 (4) mm long.

The berries are round and 6 to 8 mm in diameter, or oblong-spindle-shaped and 12 to 20 mm long, orange or reddish-orange. In some species they are enclosed in the calyx which is not or slightly enlarged. They contain only a few seeds , which when compressed are kidney-shaped and 2 to 2.5 mm long.
