distribution

Notocelia cynosbatella is native to the Palearctic . The species is found in much of Europe, including the British Isles . In the east, the occurrence extends over Asia Minor to the Middle East (Iran) and via Central Asia (Kazakhstan) to China and Mongolia. The species is quite common in Central Europe.

Way of life

The typical habitat of the species are hedge biotopes, forests and gardens. The host plants of Notocelia cynosbatella are primarily roses ( Rosa ). The species forms one generation per year. The butterflies fly between late April and late July, mainly at dusk and at night. The caterpillars feed on the flower buds and young shoots or between two leaves that are spun together. In addition to roses, plants of the genera Rubus (including blackberries and raspberries), Pyrus (pears), Malus (apples), Prunus , Cydonia (quince), Myrica , Carpinus (hornbeams) and Quercus (oaks) are used as caterpillars.

The caterpillars of Notocelia cynosbatella can cause damage to rose plantings by feeding on the flower buds.
