Notre-Dame-des-Anges (L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue)
Notre-Dame-des-Anges is the parish church in the French community of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue . It has been classified as a Monument historique since 1911 .
description
It was raised to the rank of collegiate church in 1222 and almost completely renovated from 1647 to 1670 according to a design by François de La Valfenière . In its oldest parts, the church dates back to the 14th century. Behind the Jesuit-style façade , the huge, light-flooded nave houses an exceptionally rich baroque interior . Carved allegories of the Virtues by Jean Péru can be seen under the galleries of the chapels .
The seven-sided apse is occupied by a large altarpiece and a semicircular woodwork from the 17th century, which is completely gilded and richly carved. The altarpiece consists of two twisted and fluted columns, a painting by Reynaud Levieux frame. It depicts the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and was painted in Rome in 1680 . The pillars have a finely carved arcature on which two angels rest. The arcature itself is surmounted by a recessed triangular gable , which carries two further angels and which frame a statue of the Virgin Mary .
The side chapels are filled with works of art by Nicolas Mignard , Pierre Parrocel and Simon Vouet . In the first south chapel, a painting by Wilhelm Ernst Greve from 1636 shows a gentlemanly view of the city that has just been freed from the plague . On the altar is the statue of Notre-Dame de Sorguette , the patron saint of fishermen, who is carried in procession every year .
