Notre-Dame (Paimpont)
Notre-Dame is a Roman Catholic parish and former abbey church in Paimpont in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in Brittany . The church has been classified as a monument historique since 1966 .
history
In the forest of Paimpont, a Benedictine monastery was founded in the 7th century by St. Judicaël, which was subordinate to the Abbey of Saint-Méen-le-Grand as a priory . The priory was destroyed during a Norman raid in the 9th century and later rebuilt. These older structures were replaced in the 13th century after the priory was converted into an Augustinian Canons Abbey in 1199 .
The abbey church was built in the Gothic style on a cross-shaped floor plan and is reminiscent of the contemporary architecture of the Cistercians . The single nave nave is vaulted by a wooden barrel, the crossing , the transept arms and the single -bay choir with straight east end have simple ribbed vaults from the 15th century. On the outside, the nave gives the impression of a basilica . The church has served as a parish church since the French Revolution .
