Nova Zembla - Unknown Land is a Dutch historical film from 2011. It is the first Dutch feature film to be shot in 3D technology and, in the year of its creation, was the most expensive Dutch film to date with a production cost of 7 million euros.

action

The film describes the third and last voyage of the Dutch navigators Jacob van Heemskerk and Willem Barentsz in 1596/97: The expedition was to find a new route to India through the Arctic Ocean, prompted by the Spanish sea blockade. But when the ship gets stuck in the ice, the crew is forced to survive the arctic winter in a makeshift hut on the island of Nova Zembla . The events are described from the point of view of Gerrit de Veer , who took part in the expedition and on whose diaries the film plot is largely based.
