Nuapapu (also: Niuapapu , Noapapu , Nuababu , Nuapapu Island , Nuipapa ) is an island in the Tongan archipelago of Vavaʻu . In 2008 Kapa had around 135 residents.

geography

Nuapapu is one of the larger islands in the Vavaʻu archipelago and has a highly indented topography. The island was formed from reefs in the interior of an atoll and is therefore very irregular in shape. The main part of the island encloses two bays in the south, in which there are other islets. The island is bounded to the west and north by the Ava Pulepulekai Channel , which separates it from the northern neighboring island of Hunga with its daughter islets. The island of Kapa joins the center of the archipelago to the east , with which the island shares a bay in which the islets Aʻa and ʻOto are located. In the south lies the Matamaka bay , which also gives its name to the small town on the headland. While Kitu is an extension of the island to the north, the islets of Vakaʻeitu , Langitau and Lape join in the south , which enclose the Matamaka Bay, in which the islets Alinonga and Kulo lie together with the Tangatasito reef . To the east, the island of Lua'ofa forms an extension of the Matamaka peninsula. The main town of the island, Nopapu , is located on the northern tip of the island.

climate

The climate is tropical hot, but is tempered by constantly blowing winds. Like the other islands of the Vava'u group, Nuapapu is occasionally hit by cyclones .
