The Nubian goat milker ( Caprimulgus nubicus ) is a species of bird in the nightjar family (Caprimulgidae).

It occurs in Egypt , Ethiopia , Djibouti , Eritrea , Israel , Yemen , Kenya , Oman , Saudi Arabia , Somalia and Sudan .

The distribution area typically includes dry, hardly overgrown rivers ( wadis ), acacia-covered bushland, thickets of tamarisks , semi-deserts from 600 to 1250 m.

description

The Nubian goat milker is 21–22 cm tall, the male weighs between 46 and 56 g, the female between 49 and 69 g. The upper side is grayish or yellow-brown with thin black-brown stripes, the vertex is often strongly striped or red-brown spotted. The male is similar to the mountain night swallow , but has smaller white corners on the outer control feathers , is overall paler and more gray-brown, in flight more red-brown is visible on the wings.

The call of the male is described as a two- or three-tone "ow-wow" or "ow-wow-wow", called from the ground.

Geographic variation

The following recognized subspecies are distinguished:

  • C. n. Tamaricis Tristram , 1864 - Israel and Jordan to Saudi Arabia and Yemen; in winter also on the coasts of Sudan and Eritrea as well as in north-western Somalia
  • C. n. Nubicus Lichtenstein , 1823, nominate form - Sudan
  • C. n. Torridus E. L. Phillips , 1898 - Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, possibly also northeast Uganda, Socotra

Way of life

The food consists of moths , grasshoppers and beetles , which are mostly hunted near water.

The breeding season is not exactly known, it is between April and July in Jordan and Israel, and possibly extends into September in Saudi Arabia.

The Nubian goat milker is not considered to be endangered ( Least Concern ).
