The Nubra Valley is a high mountain valley at an average of 3000 m above sea level and is located in the far north of India about 150 km north of Leh , Ladakh . The name is said to be derived from the word Ldumra , the "valley of flowers". The Nubra Valley is made up of the valley of the wild, 550 km long Shyok to the India-Pakistan border ( Line of Control ) and the Valley of from the Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram fed Nubra that at Diskit flows into the Shyok.
The Shyok rises on the east side of the southern Karakoram and flows around it first in a southern direction, from the Shyok arch in a north-westerly direction. In Pakistan the river flows into the Indus . The Ladakh Range is located southwest of the Nubra Valley between Shyok and Indus . The Karakorum Pass connects the Nubra Valley on the Shyok upper reaches with the Uyghur Autonomous Region Xinjiang , which belongs to China, to the east . Today it is no longer important as a trade route.
The wide valley landscape is often overgrown with sea buckthorn . The population consists of Ladakhs. Most of them are Buddhists , one in the far west before the Shyok the Line of Control crosses, living Baltic minority consists of Muslims of the Shia and Sunni .
tourism
The valley can only be reached from Leh via the Kardung-La-Pass . A crossing of the Shyoktal from the Pakistani Indus Valley is not permitted due to the Indian-Pakistani border conflict. Interesting points for tourists are the many Buddhist monasteries (especially the high-altitude Diskit Gompa). In the far north near Panamik there are hot springs, where attempts are being made to build bathing facilities. Downstream from Diskit, local camels can be ridden on the Shyok sand dunes.
