Shyok river valley

The Shyok is an approximately 550 km long tributary of the Indus in Ladakh ( India ) and Gilgit-Baltistan ( Pakistan ).

Its source is on the east side of the Karakoram Mountains in India near the border with China . There it rises from the Rimo glacier below the Rimo I at an altitude of 6983  m . Shortly after the source, it receives a tributary that tapers from the Chinese side and is longer than itself. On the Indian side, it flows in a V-shaped arc first in a south-easterly and then in a westerly direction. In the first section of the arch it receives further inflows from the Chinese side. The most important tributary is the Chang-Chen-Mo , which flows into it shortly before the tip of the V-bend. In the second section of the V-bend, the Nubra flows into the Shyok, with which it forms a wide high valley ( Nubra valley ), which is flown through in a widely fanned manner. Later the Shyok narrows and runs roughly parallel to the southern Indus , into which it flows at Keris in Pakistan.

Except for the immediate river banks, the high valley of the Shyok is largely dry and without any vegetation. Settlement areas in which arable farming and agriculture are practiced and which have artificially created vegetation are an exception, however.
