Nuke is compositing and visual effects software for the professional film and video post-production sector . The software is currently developed and distributed by The Foundry .

It has been used in well over 45 feature films, numerous commercials and music videos. Nuke won an Oscar for Technical Innovation and is used by many of the leading visual effects studios including Digital Domain , DNA Productions , ReelFX , Sway , Gray Matter Effects , Optical & Graphics , Industrial Light & Magic , Sony Pictures Imageworks , Weta Digital , Pixomondo and Framestore . Nuke was used in the 1994 feature film True Lies . Other film examples are Apollo 13 (1995), Titanic (1997), xXx (2002), I, Robot (2004), King Kong (2005) and Avatar (2009).

function

The program offers tools for the complete manipulation of moving images. These are, for example, color corrections , keying , creating and animating masks and effects, image transformations in three-dimensional space, combining and manipulating individual channels in image files, combining several images / animations or typographic animations.

The graphical user interface is based on nodes that are arranged in the node graph (a directed acyclic graph ). A node describes an operation in the compositing script. This can contain image data, manipulations or effects.

By dispensing with an elaborate graphic display, the surface appears simple and functional, which benefits the workflow. With the help of the scripting languages Tcl and Python , the user can freely arrange and adapt all tool palettes. The user interface and scripting are based on TCL and Python. A software development kit (SDK) for creating plug-ins based on C ++ is also available.

Nuke offers the possibility to import OBJ, FBX and Alembic files. 3D objects and cameras can be animated three-dimensionally directly in Nuke or provided with shaders and textures. The integrated scanline rendering takes over the calculation of the 3D objects .

Nuke is available for all common platforms ( Windows , Linux and macOS ). The OpenFX plug-in architecture (OFX) is used as the interface for plug-ins from third-party manufacturers . Plugin packages from leading manufacturers such as The Foundry or Primatte are offered for this purpose.

history

Nuke was originally developed by the VFX studio Digital Domain . In 2007 Nuke was taken over by The Foundry and developed further. Since version 5, which was released in 2008, Nuke contains functions for editing stereoscopic material. In 2009, The Foundry launched an expanded version, Nuke X. In addition to an integrated matchmoving function , this package also contains other plugins.
