Nunatak (band)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British Rothera Research Station in Antarctica is home to the band Nunatak .

Nunatak is the name of the house band of the British Rothera station on Adelaide Island off the Antarctic Peninsula . It consists of five young scientists from the research station who describe their style of music as "indie-rock-folk-fusion". On July 7, 2007 the amateur musicians took part in the Live Earth concert series . Her appearance in front of the remaining 17 people of the station crew in the Antarctic winter was broadcast several times that day by various media around the world and had a potential reach of around two billion viewers and listeners.

Lead singer and guitarist of the group is the electrical engineer Matt Balmer, the communication engineer Tris Thorne plays the electrically amplified violin , the biologist Alison "Ali" Massey tenor saxophone , the meteorologist Rob Webster drums and the research assistant and polar guide Roger Stilwell electric bass . The musicians were between 22 and 28 years old at the time of Live Earth .

The band was originally called Rachet Death (a corruption of Rat Shit Death , the slang term for a disease earlier in the region around the Chilean city of Punta Arenas ), but changed its name in March 2007 because of the expected Live Earth performance in the Inuit language derived glaciological term Nunatak . Shortly before, the musicians had been asked by the Live Earth producers to write a song for the event, which was to be recorded and broadcast on July 7th. The British Antarctic Research Institute British Antarctic Survey (BAS) had a cameraman flown in for the last supply flight in the Antarctic summer. Ultimately, two songs were recorded: The videos of "How many people" and "Would You Do it All Again" were sent over a high-speed data link to the UK for further distribution. So far, Nunatak has never performed outside of Rothera Station.
