Nusfjord is a fishing village on Flakstadøy , one of the main islands of the Lofoten Archipelago . The village is part of the municipality Flakstad in Norwegian Fylke Nordland . The place was one of the Norwegian pilot projects for the European monument protection year 1975.

geography

Nusfjord

Nusfjord is located in the south of the Lofoten island Flakstadøy on the Bottelvika fjord , which flows into the Vestfjord . The village is sharply delimited towards the land by steep mountains. The highest of the surrounding mountains is Tønsåsheia at 769 m (above sea level) . A river flows through the village from the nearby Nervatnet lake to the fjord.

history

According to archaeological finds, the area of what is now Nusfjord has been inhabited since around 400 AD. Finds of fishermen's huts from this period show that fishing for commercial purposes was apparently already practiced at that time. In modern times, Nusfjord was owned by the Norwegian crown.

The Dahl family bought the village in 1823 and 1843 and expanded it to become Lofoten's leading fishing village by 1989. Today's property includes 1,750 hectares of mountains, five lakes, two historic power plants and around 50 buildings.

The village of Nusfjord can now be visited as an open-air museum in the summer months .

Economy and Transport

Drying stockfish

Fylkesvei 807 ends in Nusfjord and connects the town to European route 10 . This leads east to Leknes on the island of Vestvågøy . The nearest airport is there. There is also a bus connection to the place.

The village of Nusfjord is connected to the town of Nesland by a historic fishing route. This is now used as a hiking trail and is marked with a red T.

Nusfjord has a natural harbor. Because of the limited space, the village was built on wooden walkways, among other things. The historically preserved part of the village consists of red, white and ocher-colored wooden houses, most of which date from the 19th century. The place is considered one of the oldest and best-preserved fishing villages in Lofoten. 28 traditional fishermen's huts, called rorbuer , have been preserved and are rented out to tourists as accommodation. The main economic factors of the place are fishing and tourism.

fishing

In the months of February to April, fish (mainly cod ) is caught , processed on site and dried on wooden racks on the outskirts of the village. In the summer the finished stockfish is sold to Italy , Spain , Portugal and Africa .

tourism

The village is a major draw for travelers due to its well-preserved historical buildings. Most of the preserved buildings can be visited as an open-air museum.

The place offers rorbuer , originally seasonal fishermen's huts, as accommodation. Of the 48 huts available for rent, 28 are historic fishermen's huts. To the south of the village, more huts are being built that are not yet completed. In addition to renting rorbuer, tourists are offered various activities. There are rentals for bicycles, motor boats, kayaks and fishing equipment.

In addition to the farm buildings that are still in use, a cod liver oil boiler has been preserved. The power plant from 1905 is a listed building. In addition, a forge, a smokehouse, a boathouse, the bakery and a sawmill can be visited. An inn and a restaurant are operated in historical buildings. There is also a grocery store from 1907, which sells typical groceries from this period, as well as souvenirs.
