Nushki (Baluchi: نوشکی; also Noshki, Noshke, Noshkal, Nushkal) is a city in the Province of Balochistan , Pakistan . It is the administrative seat of the Nushki District , which was spun off from the Chagai District in April 2004 and consists only of the Tehsil Nushki.

geography

Administrative division of Balochistan in 2010. The Nushki district is number 22. New districts have been added since 2010, but the boundaries of Nushki have not changed.

Nushki is located in the north of the Balochistan province, around 150 km southwest of Quetta and around 40 km south of the border with Afghanistan ( Kandahar province ) (both as the crow flies) at an altitude of around 990  m on the south-eastern edge of a plain at the foot of the westernmost chain of the Sulaymani Mountains . To the north and west, the sandy Rigestan desert extends far into Afghanistan to the Helmand rivers in the west and its tributary Arghandāb in the north.

In the Rigestan desert, about 20 km north of Nushki

The Nushki district borders on the Quetta district in the east, the Kharan and Kalat districts in the south, the Chagai district in the west and Afghanistan in the north.

Transport links

The core settlement of Nushki is about 2 km north of the national road N-40 , which leads from Quetta via Mastung and Nushki to Dalbandin and from there further west to the border with Iran at Taftan and Mīrjāveh . Smaller districts are in the immediate vicinity of the trunk road.

Roughly parallel to the N-40 national road, the approximately 750 kilometers long Quetta – Zahedan railway ( Trans-Baluchistan Railway ) runs from Quetta west to the border crossing at Taftan and on to Iran. It winds its way east of Nushki through a mountain range before reaching the small train station in Nushki. The first 146 kilometers from Quetta to Nushki were laid out in the years 1902-1905 to enable the British colonial administration to move troops into the border area. The line is the only rail link between Pakistan and Iran and part of the only rail link between Europe and the Indian subcontinent . Twice today operates a passenger train in the month, and since June 2015, moves back a container - pair of trains per week.

Between the N-40 and the city, south of the mostly dry river bed "Kaisar Rud", there is the small airfield of Nushki (IATA code NHS) with an approximately 900 m long runway . It is not used in scheduled services.

Residents

The city itself has 46,386 inhabitants, the Tehsil or district 178,796 (as of 2017). In the course of 19 years, the city's population has almost doubled: in 1998 it was 23,948. In 1981 there were 11,300 and in 1972 only 5,321. A significant proportion of this increase consists of immigrants who wanted to escape the conflicts in Afghanistan.

climate

Nushki has a pronounced desert climate, referred to as "BWh" in the Köppen and Geiger climate classification , with very hot summers and cold winters. The average maximum temperatures exceed 42 degrees Celsius in June and July .
