Nysius senecionis is a bug from the family of ground bugs (Lygaeidae).

features

The bugs are 3.9 to 4.8 millimeters long. Like many species of the genus Nysius, they are difficult to identify. The species has a pale second antennae with a dark ring at the base. The membranes of the hemielytres are usually clear and unmarked. It can be distinguished from the very similar species Nysius graminicola by the shorter first segment of the tarsi of the hind legs, which, including the claws, is less long than the second and third tarsal segments together. They also have an extensive matt area on the metapleurs.

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed in Central, Eastern and Southern Europe, as well as in the east to Central Asia and in the south throughout Africa (there with the subspecies Nysius senecionis binotatus ). It is common in Central Europe and common in many places. It is relatively rare in the lowlands of northwest Germany. It has only been proven in Great Britain since 1992, but is now widespread and common in large parts of the south to north to Yorkshire . Dry, warm, open habitats are colonized, especially on sandy soils. There they can appear so rich in individuals that they can be harmful to cultivated plants.

Way of life

Animals live polyphagous on various plants, but especially to composite flowers (Asteraceae) and here again especially on old herbs ( Senecio ), Artemisia and camomile ( Matricaria ). The Imagines talk less frequently on the floor on a Nysius Thymi and rather sit in the herbaceous layer. They overwinter under loose bark and the like. The females lay their eggs on the food plants. Since nymphs and adults occur throughout the summer , it can be assumed that at least two overlapping generations are formed each year. The mating can be seen from May to September.
