The Nyssonini are a tribe of digger wasps (Spheciformes) from the Crabronidae family . 17 genera are known worldwide, in Europe there are 38 species in two genera.

features

The small and stocky digger wasps have heavily sculpted bodies with tooth-like protrusions at the corners of the thorax . These characteristics, which occur for example in parasitic bee species, are an adaptation to the parasitic way of life and serve to protect against attacks.

Way of life

The females do not build their own nests, but are parasitoids on other digger wasp genera, such as Gorytes , Harpactus and Argogorytes . The Brachystegus species parasitize species of the genus Tachytes . The parasitoid larva not only eats the food supply of the host species , it also kills and eats the host larva or its egg.
