OM Group, Inc. was a specialty chemicals company headquartered in Cleveland , Ohio , USA with manufacturing facilities in Europe, Asia and America. The company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange and had around 2900 employees before Vacuumschmelze took over . OMG Kokkola Chemicals OY in Kokkola , Finland was the world's largest producer of cobalt in 2010 with a volume of 9299 tons .

Foundation and company history

OM Group was founded in 1991 through the merger of the American Mooney Chemicals, Inc. with Outokumpu 's Kokkola Chemicals Oy in Finland and Vasset, SA in France as the Outokumpu Mooney Group. In 1993 Outokumpu floated 96% of the group, with 4% remaining in the hands of James Mooney.

In 2007 Joseph M. Scaminace announced a long-term growth plan through product innovations and tactical and strategic acquisitions:

  • Expansion of competencies in particle control and surface modifications as well as in highly pure, functional organic and inorganic products.
  • Expansion of the existing sales market and the customer base into neighboring markets.
  • Expansion of the product portfolio and technologies in the areas of portable power (“portable energy”), electronic chemicals (chemicals for the electronics industry), catalysts (catalysts) and advanced materials .

2013: Sale of the cobalt refining activities in Kokkola , Finland to a joint venture of Freeport-McMoRan (56%), Lundin Mining (24%) and Gécamines (20%). The company was renamed Freeport Cobalt .

At the end of 2015, the remaining parts of the OM Group were taken over by Apollo Global Management . OM Group was privatized (taken off the stock exchange) and the photomask and electronic materials divisions were sold directly to Platform Specialty Products . The three remaining business units Vacuumschmelze, EaglePicher Technologies and Borchers remained with Apollo and the group was renamed VECTRA in 2015.
