O Estado de S. Paulo ( German  The State of São Paulo ) is the oldest daily newspaper in Brazil and the metropolitan region of São Paulo , which was first published on January 4, 1875, while the Empire was still in Brazil , under the name " A Província de São Paulo " ( The Province of São Paulo ), published by Júlio César de Mesquita (1862–1927). After the transformation of São Paulo from a province to a federal state, the newspaper was given its current name in January 1890. The sheet and the associated Grupo Estado are exclusively owned by the influential Mesquita family .

history

A group of sixteen Republicans gathered in São Paulo on April 18, 1873 to implement a proposal for the establishment of the first Republican newspaper in the province of São Paulo . They propagated republican ideals and called for the abolition of monarchy and the fight against slavery ( abolitionism ) and the death penalty . The main founding fathers were Américo Brasiliense de Almeida Melo , José Maria Lisboa (administrator) and Francisco Rangel Pestana , who was initially also managing editor and was replaced by Julio de Mesquita after his departure.

At that time, the paper was the first newspaper that, to the mockery of the "Paulistas", as the residents of São Paulo are called, and the competition, relied on retail sales instead of subscription. At the time, retail sales were promoted by a Frenchman, Bernard Gregoire, who was sitting on a horse and blowing his trumpet and drew attention to the sale of the newspaper. The initial print run was around 2,000 copies on four pages each, but of considerable importance for a city population of then estimated 31,000 people. Since then, the newspaper has grown closely with the metropolis and has increasingly influenced political developments in the country. From 1902 the newspaper was in the exclusive property of the Mesquita family, who are still influential in Brazil today. After the death of Júlio de Mesquita, his son Júlio de Mesquita Filho took over the editing in 1927 , while his brother Francisco was in charge of finances.

During the First World War , the newspaper supported the Allies, after which the extensive German colony in São Paulo had all advertisements in the newspaper removed. Up until the end of the Second World War , the newspaper offended the Brazilian rulers of the time and was also repeatedly confiscated and censored .

After the Second World War, the “O Estado” developed into the most important newspaper in Brazil. For a long time she stood in opposition to most governments until 1964, when she supported the military coup in Castello Branco . After the military regime dissolved the parties, "O Estado" broke with the military regime. The newspaper was then subjected to censorship again, against which it fiercely resisted under the direction of Júlio de Mesquita Neto .

Modern media group

In 1958, the group began to diversify with the launch of Rádio Eldorado , a station that broadcasts on FM and AM radio programs. In 1966 the Jornal da Tarde was launched. An important step, however, was the establishment of a news service with the Agência Estado (AE), the largest news agency in Brazil. The "AE" supplies the media of the Estado Group with news, pictures and radio reports. In 1984 OESP Mídia was born and OESP-Gráfica , a modern printing company , has existed since 1988 . The online edition has existed since 2000.

In the 1980s, the paper underwent mainly stylistic changes, and the newspaper was also getting color. O Estado is currently the fifth largest newspaper in Brazil and the second largest newspaper in São Paulo, after the Folha de S. Paulo . In general, the population calls the Estado "Estadão", a loving form of enlargement, grammatically called " Augmentative ".

Aurélio de Almeida Prado Cidade has been Chairman of the Estado Group's Supervisory Board since June 15, 2007 . The "Estadão" with its serious layout is comparable to the German FAZ and belongs to the social-liberal political spectrum.
