Obama anthropophila is a species of land planarians in the Obama genus. O. anthropophila is commonly found in human-altered habitats in southern and southeastern Brazil .

features

Obama anthropophila is a medium-sized land planarie with a lance-shaped body. Individuals reach a body length of approximately 70 millimeters. The back color varies from dark to lighter brown tones, the color becomes lighter towards the edges. The ventral side shows a pale gray or brown color and becomes darker at the edges where it merges into the back color. O. anthropophila has a similar appearance to the closely related species Obama decidualis and Obama ladislavii , differences are mainly evident in the body color.

Adult individual of the species Obama anthropophila in front of a packet of eggs . The fully developed testicles can be seen as two rows of irregular dark spots on the back.

Many eyes of O. anthropophila are distributed on the first millimeters of the body on the edge, further back there are eyes mainly on the back side, where they occupy the midline and are less numerous. The eyes on the back are surrounded by an area without color pigments, so that these are recognizable as small, light points in dark individuals.

In adult animals, two irregular rows of darker colored spots can be seen in the front half of the body; these are many testicles that shine through the body surface.

distribution

Obama anthropophila has been found in southern and southeastern Brazil, from São Paulo to Rio Grande do Sul . The main sites were anthropogenically modified habitats and edges of subtropical forests.

nutrition

In laboratory tests, O. anthropophila caught and ate small snails , including agricultural pests such as Bradybaena similaris , spotted garden snails and water snails . Furthermore, O. anthropophila feeds on other land planarians such as Luteostriata abundans , probably the main prey in the natural habitat , and invasive species such as Dolichoplana carvalhoi and Endeavouria septemlineata . In rare cases, O. anthropophila also hunts other species of its own genus, for example Obama ladislavii .

etymology

The name Obama is derived from the Tupi language that was spoken on the Atlantic coast of Brazil . It is a combination of the words oba ( dt. Leaf ) and ma ( dt. Animal ). This refers to the outer, leaf-like shape.

The type epithet anthropophila is derived from the Greek anthropos ( dt. Human ) and philos ( dt. Friend ), which refers to the frequent finds in cultural landscapes.
