Upper castle chapel ruins of the Reichsburg Kyffhausen

The upper castle chapel ruin of the Reichsburg Kyffhausen was located on the current site of the Kaiser Wilhelm monument in the Steinthaleben district of the Kyffhäuserland community not far from the city of Bad Frankenhausen in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia .

The ring wall of the upper castle had only one entrance through the Erfurt Gate that was still in place. It ended in the northeast in a now in ruins square tower. The last Burgmanns apartments were located below this curtain wall to the east of the moat of the guard tower , which had been blasted into the rock , where columns and a stone staircase that led deeper down were recently found. The Burgmann apartments mentioned above were located there in 1445.

The square keep of the upper castle, which is also called Barbarossaturm, should be dedicated to Friedrich I. This tower had an external staircase that gave access to the tower on the second floor.
