Oberer Eimersee , usually shortened to Eimersee , is the name of an artificially created pond with an area of approximately 1.5 hectares in the urban area of Eckernförde in Schleswig-Holstein .

Surname

The lake owes its name to its unusual history. This has spread to Japan , South Korea and the United States as a successful example of inexpensive renaturation . The Eimersee is the striking figurehead for the ecological orientation of the urban planning concept of the city of Eckernförde, which began in 1984.

The lake and its surroundings are primarily intended as an attractive habitat for animals and plants. This has made the area a popular destination. The specially created hiking trail crosses the outflow of the lake. A simple footbridge and stepping stones serve for the crossing. At this point, children, for example groups from kindergartens, have the opportunity to play in and with the running water. At the same time, you can observe and experience nature. If the ice is thick enough, the area of the Eimersee is used for ice skating.

Origin and naming

By renaturing the upper course of the Lachsenbach, the original creek bed was restored for 56,000  DM . On December 6, 1990, the nature conservation officer of the city of Eckernförde, Michael Packschies, explained to the press representatives present how the Dramms Koppel valley, through which the Lachsenbach flows , is being transformed into a wetland : all that is needed is a plastic mortar bucket (cost: 5.90 DM), which prevents the water from flowing away. The bucket was then wedged in a control shaft in the depression by Packschies, the original drainage of the piped stream was closed and the water began to accumulate. In January 1991 the water level reached its highest level and the water flowed off via a natural overflow. The water depth of the Eimersee is up to 1.5 meters.

The suffix “Oberer” was chosen because the method of damming water had previously been tested for suitability on a smaller scale below the later Eimersee. This created a small and very flat area of water that can be classified as a swamp.
