history

Sebastian Geist was born in the house

A building at this location was first mentioned in a document in 1690. As early as 1698 there was a "Schenkstatt", i.e. an inn in the upper suburb , which Hans Peter Vogel ran as the landlord. The house included a barn next to the poor house , several lots and vineyards. In addition to the inn, Vogel also ran a saddlery workshop . He was still active as "Rosenwirth" in 1730; the name rose was first mentioned in 1713.

After Vogel's death in 1736, his widow took over the restaurant . In 1771 the new owner Peter Schulz converted the house into a residential and commercial building. Georg Ackermann sat there in 1776. In 1800 the building became an inn again, run by Michael Mittenzwei. The upper floor probably housed apartments, in one of which the future painter Peter Geist was born in 1816 , and a year later his brother Sebastian Geist , who became a watchmaker, was born there.

Michael Mittenzwei handed the house over to his son Rudolf Mittenzwei before 1825, who ran a red tanner workshop next to the inn . Rudolf Mittenzwei died before 1860. In 1886 Josef Domenikus Schmitt bought the house. In the second half of the 19th century, there were frequent changes of ownership. At first the married couple Johann and Anna Deppisch sat there, after 1903 Michael Gaßner worked as a rose innkeeper.

Sebastian Heßmann took over the house in 1918. Members of his family are still working as rose hosts to this day. In 1951 Sebastian Gaßmann was the owner of the restaurant, in 1960 Josef Heßmann is proven to be the host. He also started viticulture and built a winery . Michael Heßmann has been running the Rosen-Gasthof, renamed as Weingasthof, since 1984. In 1999 the artist Norbert Kleinlein redesigned the square in front of the inn with bronze medallions and a watercourse into a so-called Volkach history book with scenes from the city's history .

description

The house is a two-storey eaves side house with a hipped roof from the 18th century, which forms the southern end of the square. During a renovation, corner cubes were attached, the sandstone walls of the windows are drilled and partially fasciated. A plaque with the inscription "Birthplace of the Franconian painter / Peter Geist (1816–1867)" refers to the most famous resident of the building.
