history

Early years

Fritz Friedlaender, the son of a coal wholesaler, founded a coking plant in Gleiwitz on June 14, 1884. His company was converted into a joint stock company in 1890 under the name Oberschlesische Kokswerke und Chemische Fabriken , which was known on the stock exchange under the abbreviated name Oberkoks and at that time consisted of the two coking plants Poręba and Skalley . The share capital was initially 4.5 million marks . The company grew rapidly through new operations and acquisitions. In 1891 the first Upper Silesian benzene factory was built on the Julienhütte . In 1903 Oberkoks took over two Rybnik ironworks, the Donnersmarck hut and the Reden hut. From 1905 to 1909 this development was vigorously promoted by the chairman of the board, Paul Liebert (1846–1909). With the expansion, the share capital grew to 21.5 million marks in 1914. In 1920 the mines Fuchs and David near Waldenburg were acquired.

Expansion towards pharmacy

In 1922 Oberkoks turned its attention to pharmaceutical production and took over the majority of the shares in the chemical factory on Actien formerly E. Schering and the shares in the chemical factory CAF Kahlbaum GmbH . These changes were also visible in a renaming on June 30, 1925: The addition "Oberschlesische" was dropped and the company was now called Kokswerke und Chemische Fabriken AG . A year earlier, the share capital, which had swelled to 275 million marks during the inflationary period, had been converted to 80.3 million Reichsmarks . The two subsidiaries Chemische Fabrik CAF Kahlbaum GmbH and Chemische Fabrik auf Actien formerly E. Schering were merged in 1927 to form Schering-Kahlbaum AG . The expansion continued by purchasing the majority of shares in Rombacher Hüttenwerke AG , which also owned the Concordia colliery in the Rhine-Westphalian industrial area .

Reorganization to Schering AG

In 1937, Kokswerke und Chemische Fabriken AG acquired the entire share capital of their subsidiary Schering-Kahlbaum AG . The new company was run under the name Schering AG because of the internationally respected name Schering . The group consisted of a chemistry department and a mining department . After the takeover, Hans Berckemeyer was chairman of the supervisory board until 1945 .
