Oberpostdirektion Frankfurt (building)
The former building of the Frankfurt Oberpostdirektion at Ludwig-Erhard-Anlage 60-64 in the Westend district of Frankfurt is a listed building . The building has been owned by the CG Group since 2015 .
prehistory
The Frankfurt Oberpostdirektion was based in the main post office in Frankfurt am Main on the Zeil from 1867 to 1907 . Despite the expansion of the area, there was no longer enough space there, also because telegraphy tasks were added from 1876 and telephony from 1881 .
New building
Therefore, it was decided to build a separate building for the Oberpostdirektion. The plans came from the architect and high-ranking Reichspost construction officer Ernst Hake (1844–1925), but a contemporary source instead names the Post Construction Inspector Meyer and the Privy Post Councilor Perdisch as the main responsible. From 1905 to 1907 the new house was built in the neo-baroque style. In April 1907, 241 employees of the Frankfurt Oberpostdirektion moved into the new building.
The building
The side facing the street is - following the street layout of today's Ludwig-Erhard-Anlage leading to Senckenberganlage - slightly convex. The center of the facade is emphasized by a risalit , which shows a three-storey colossal order with Ionic columns . The building is bordered by two side elevations - an impressive example of historicist representational architecture . This impression is enhanced by the fact that the original mansard roof has been replaced by two full floors. The office wings are arranged around two trapezoidal inner courtyards.
The building was badly damaged in the Allied air raids on March 22nd and March 24th, 1944. While the main post office on the Zeil was completely destroyed, the building of the Oberpostdirektion Frankfurt could be rebuilt after the war.
After the Frankfurt Post Office moved out, KfW Bankengruppe was the main tenant. The building is currently being renovated and converted into 164 condominiums, which will be sold under the name “Grand Ouest” at square meter prices between € 8,150 and € 13,000. The building of the former Oberpostdirektion Frankfurt is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .
