Obi (beverage brand)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Obi is in Switzerland introduced at the beginning of the 20th century apple and fruit juice - brand . Today it is manufactured on the one hand in Switzerland by Thurella AG , on the other hand in Austria by Eckes-Granini .

The word obi one is acronym for O bstverwertung Bi schofszell and goes on to the beginning of 1906 in the canton of Thurgau founded community cider cooperative back Obi. This also included the subsidiaries Obipektin AG (founded in 1936), Obi-Kriesi AG (later OBI Weinkellerei AG) and the then Thurella AG, which were also located in Bischofszell. The "Obidörfli" housing estate in Bischofszell, which was built in 1945/1946, is named after the Obi cider cooperative.

In the 1930s, OBI Bischofszell developed a method with which apple juice could be processed into concentrate and this could be diluted with water to make juice again if necessary. Later, the Austrian Ybbstaler fruit processing company acquired both the brand name and the method for Austria, while the trademark rights for Switzerland remained with OBI Bischofszell.

In 1998 the "fruit processing" division of OBI Bischofszell was incorporated into "Obi Frucht und Saft AG". This was taken over a few months later, including the then sales company Thurella AG and the brands obi and Rittergold, from the then Thurella cooperative in Egnach. Until the end of 2010, the successor to the Thurella cooperative, the Thurella Group, which was formed under the listed Thurella AG, produced and sold obi and Rittergold. As part of the measures in the course of the restructuring of the troubled Thurella Group, the production and sale of ready-made apple juice products and thus the well-known brands obi and Rittergold were discontinued at the end of 2010. Since then, only semi-finished products under the Thurella brand have been produced there for the bottlers of apple juice and mixed drinks.

Development in Austria

The obi brand, whose trademark rights for Austria were held by Ybbstal fruit processing until 1982, spread particularly in Austria, where obi apple juice was already being offered in restaurants in the 1930s. The word “Obi” established itself primarily in parlance in Eastern Austria as a synonym for apple juice; "Obi spritzed" is used as the name for "apple juice sprinkled" (Germany: "apple spritzer "; Switzerland: also "apple prudel").

In 1982 Eckes-Granini acquired the trademark rights for obi apple juice in Austria from Ybbstaler Obstverwertung .
