Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West is a documentary from 2005 about the perceived threat to the West by Islam . The film uses excerpts from Arab television and shows radical Islamic hate preachers who call for global jihad . The South African writer-director Wayne Kopping draws parallels between Nazism and Islamism and the approach of the West to these two threats.

Portions of the film were broadcast on CNN and Fox News . The film was distributed in an unusual way: 28 million free DVDs were distributed as a supplement in over 70 newspapers in Swing States prior to the 2008 presidential election in the United States .

The film begins with the following quote:

“This is a film about radical Islamist terror. A dangerous ideology that is incited by religious hatred. It is important to remember that most Muslims are peaceful and oppose this terror. This is not a movie about her. This is a film about a radical world view and the danger this view is to all of us, Muslims and non-Muslims alike. "

The film used clips from Arab television provided by the Middle East Media Research Institute .

distribution

CNN aired parts of the film. Fox News has shown portions of the film on its website and on television. Seven times in 2006, Fox News used parts of the film for a one-hour special. The film was also shown at 30 US universities.

After the usual distribution channels were unsuccessful, The Clarion Fund retained the distribution rights and distributed 28 million DVDs by mail in the Swing States . The DVD was also distributed to all 30,000 members of the Republican Jewish Coalition . Newspapers that distributed the film included The New York Times , The Charlotte Observer , The Miami Herald , News & Observer , The Chronicle of Higher Education , The Oregonian, and many more. Many newspapers wrote articles about the film on the day of its release. A few newspapers refused to publish articles about the film or distribute the DVDs.

reception

The film has received praise from personalities such as Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity . Glenn Beck described the film as "one of the most important films in our lifetime". Emmett Tyrrell wrote that the film is "one of the most compelling films about the struggle the civilized world faces". The film received further support from Fox News Townhall , and National Review .

Some criticized the portrayal of the Islamists as Islamophobic . The distribution of the film on the 7th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, ahead of the 2008 US presidential election, was also criticized.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations requested that the Federal Election Commission investigate the distribution .
