The Obstansersee hut is an alpine club hut of the Alpenverein Austria in the ÖAV , located in the East Tyrolean part of the Carnic Alps . It is classified as AV hut category I and is an important stage base on the Carnic High Trail .
location
The Obstansersee hut is located on the northern shore of the eponymous lake , in the middle of a small basin, which is only a few hundred meters north of the border with the Italian province of Belluno .
history
In the First World War , the area of today's hut from 1915 to 1917 during the so-called mountain war was in the immediate vicinity of the front, because at that time the front line between Austria-Hungary and Italy lay on the main ridge of the Carnic Alps, which ran just south . During this time, the path leading from the head of the Winklertal to the hut was expanded. It was needed as a supply line for the Austrian troops lying in this section and had to be partially blown out of a rock face. In the vicinity of the Obstansersee hut, a military cemetery about 20 minutes away and the ruined remains of numerous fortifications on the ridge line still remind us of this bloody chapter.
The first small hut on the Obstansersee was built in 1929 and although it was very simply furnished and only offered 14 places to stay overnight, it was managed right from the start. This hut was renovated in 1950, but replaced by a new building thirty years later. This now offered 32 overnight places, but this soon turned out to be too tight. That is why the decision was made in 1998 to start expanding the hut and then implement it five years later.
