Ochiai ( Jap. 落合町 , - machi ) was a municipality in the district Toyotama of Tokyo . Ochiai was founded in 1889 as a village community ( mura ) in Minami-Toshima County, which was later merged with Higashi-Tama County to form Toyotama County. In 1924 Ochiai received the status of a (small) town ( machi ). With the expansion of the Tokyo metropolitan area in 1932, the community in the Yodobashi district of Tokyo went up.

The area of Ochiai extended into what is now the districts of Kami-Ochiai ("Upper Ochiai"), Shimo-Ochiai ("Lower Ochiai"), Naka-Ochiai ("Middle Ochiai") and Nishi-Ochiai ("West- Ochiai ”) from Shinjuku .

geography

Ochiai was west of Tokyo on the left bank of the Kanda , where the Myōshōji flows into the Kanda. The majority of the community was on the Toshima-dai, a branch of the Musashino plateau . The name Ochiai originated from the confluence of the Kanda and Myōshōji - ochiau ( 落 ち 合 う ) means "to meet".

As a community, Ochiai was divided into three Ōaza : Kami-Ochiai, Shimo-Ochiai and Kuzugatani ( 葛 ヶ 谷 ) in the west, which corresponded to the three pre-modern villages of the area.

history

Ochiai was created in 1889 when the Meiji government established modern local authorities. In 1932 it was incorporated into the city of Tokyo, where it merged with Yodobashi , Ōkubo and Totsuka in the Yodobashi district.

traffic

Ochiai was a bit off the pre-modern main thoroughfares from Edo, the Kōshū-kaidō in the south and the Nakasendō in the north. The Shinagawa line opened in 1885 by Japan's first private railway company, the Nippon Tetsudō , passed Ochiai in the east. The Kōbu Tetsudō ran south through the neighboring Nakano .

In 1927, the Seibu Tetsudō opened the Murayama line from Takadanobaba to Higashimurayama with a stop at Shimo-Ochai station.
