The Thomas Pfeifhase ( Ochotona thomasi ) is a species of mammal from the family of the Pfeifhasen within the hare-like . Their range is limited to the isolated mountains of the eastern Qilian Shan in western China .

features

The Thomas Pfeifhase reaches a body length of 10.5 to 16.5 centimeters and is colored gray. It differs from the sympatric living Gansu-Pfeifhasen ( Ochotona cansus ) mainly in the size and shape of the skull. The skull is of the same length and is much narrower and the skull is elliptical in shape.

distribution

Distribution area (brown) of Ochotona thomasi

The Thomas Pfeifhase is endemic to the People's Republic of China . The species occurs on isolated mountains of the eastern Qilian Shan in western China in the provinces of Gansu , Qinghai and northwestern Sichuan . There she lives at altitudes of 3400 to 4020 meters.

Way of life

Little information is available about the way of life of this pika; it probably differs only little from that of the Gansu-Pfeifhasen, with whom it lives sympathetically in some areas . He uses meadows and areas rich in shrubbery at high altitudes as living space. It is diurnal and, as a generalized herbivore, feeds on grasses and other available plants. He probably lives in small family groups.

Systematics

The Thomas Pfeifhase was assigned as a separate species to the Pfeifhasen (genus Ochotona ) and the subgenus Ochotona , subspecies are not known. It was first scientifically described by Argyropulo in 1948. The species name honors Oldfield Thomas , who first described the pigeon family in 1897.

Hazard and protection

The species is classified as not endangered (least concern) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) due to its relatively wide distribution area. In its range, however , Ochotona thomasi is rare and hardly any data is available on its way of life and population size. Pest control in China, which is directed against other small mammals, is viewed as a potential source of danger.
