Ocotlán is a city in the Mexican state of Jalisco with around 84,000 inhabitants. Ocotlán is about 1,530 meters above sea ​​level and is the administrative seat and largest town of the municipality of the same name, Ocotlán .

The city, founded in 1530 , got its name from the Aztec word ocōtl , which means the Montezuma pine . The toponomastics Ocotlán creates a proximity to the pines and roughly means: near the pines . The inhabitants of the city are called Ocotlenses .

Part of the city was destroyed by an earthquake on October 2, 1847.
