Ocotlán is a city in the Mexican state of Jalisco with around 84,000 inhabitants. Ocotlán is about 1,530 meters above sea level and is the administrative seat and largest town of the municipality of the same name, Ocotlán .
The city, founded in 1530 , got its name from the Aztec word ocōtl , which means the Montezuma pine . The toponomastics Ocotlán creates a proximity to the pines and roughly means: near the pines . The inhabitants of the city are called Ocotlenses .
The city northeast of Lake Chapala is known for its furniture industry .
Part of the city was destroyed by an earthquake on October 2, 1847.
