Odd Nerdrum (born April 8, 1944 in Helsingborg , Sweden ) is a Norwegian painter and writer .

He studied from 1962 to 1965 at the Oslo Art Academy ( Statens Kunstakademi ). His painting style is based on Titian , Caravaggio and Rembrandt . Also Edvard Munch and Ernst Josephson exerted a certain influence on him. As a student he was already looking for a counter-movement to the American Pop Art of Andy Warhol or Robert Rauschenberg .

His works can now be found in museums around the world, e.g. B. in the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC , in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, in the National Gallery in Oslo and in the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt . His pictures fetched prices of up to 300,000 US dollars on the art market.

criticism

Odd Nerdrum's art has received a lot of criticism. His realistic painting in the style of the Old Masters was devalued as neoconservative . Nerdrum himself confessed to kitsch early on , and he advocates a positive re-evaluation. His admirers in German-speaking countries include the playwright Botho Strauss and the writer Christian Kracht .

Nerdrum was becoming increasingly sensitive to reviews and reports from the Norwegian media. He basically gave no interviews between 2002 and 2010. He was accused of portraying himself as the most important and clairvoyant painter of his time, "as a superman who could help God himself to see the beautiful in his own creation" (Johan L. Tønnesson).

Private

Nerdrum lived with the artist Cecilie Broch Knudsen for 17 years, and since 2007 the rector of the Oslo School of Art . They have three daughters together. Since 1995 Nerdrum has been married to the Hardangerfiedel player Turid Spildo. They have two sons and two daughters. The family lives in Stavern , Norway, and in the French department of Yvelines near Paris .

Litigation

After Nerdrum had to buy back or repaint several of his pictures after they were sold because of a technical error in the addition of paint, which led to the subsequent destruction of the pictures, he deposited large sums of cash in Austria as a reserve for possible future compensation claims. When this became known to the tax authorities, he was charged with tax evasion and sentenced to two years imprisonment in absentia on August 17, 2011 in Oslo. He appealed the judgment. In the second instance, the Borgarting lagmannsrett increased the sentence on June 27, 2012 to two years and ten months. Appeals were filed against the sentencing . Nerdrum then moved in front of the Høyesterett , which could not enter the evidence again, but overturned the latest judgment because of factual errors. The reopened trial began in August 2013 in front of the Borgarting lagmannsrett and ended on June 16, 2014. The court found it proven that Nerdrum had evaded around 3 million kroner in taxes between 1999 and 2001 and sentenced him to 20 months in prison , of which eight months on probation. Thereafter, Nerdrum filed a pardon application with the Justice Department, which was then denied.

On September 22nd, 2017, Nerdrum was pardoned by King Harald . His painting was therefore not interrupted by a prison sentence. Under Norwegian law, he should not have been able to paint in prison (no professional activity).
