Ofir Akunis ( Hebrew אופיר אקוניס* 28. May 1973 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli politician of the Likud .

Life

origin

Akunis was born in Tel Aviv into a revisionist-Zionist family. His mother is of Polish Jewish descent and immigrated to Israel in 1957. His father was born in Tel Aviv, the son of Thessalonian Jews.

Early years

From 1987 to 1991 Akunis attended the Hebrew Herzlia-Gymnasium . After his military service he worked for the radio program Youth Club and other programs for the radio station Reshet Gimmel . He holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science and International Relations. He has been a member of Likud since 1992.

Political career

In 2009 Akunis took part in the Likud primaries for the general election and was placed in 26th place. The Likud won 27 seats, making Akunis a member of the Knesset . In 2013 he directed the state program Computer for Every Child . From May to August 2015 he was Minister without Portfolio. With the appointment of Danny Danon as Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Akunis succeeded him in his ministerial post in August 2015 and has been Minister for Science, Technology and Space since then .

family

Akunis is married to Adi Akunis, with whom he has two children, Yonatan and Ronnie. The family lives in Tel Aviv. Akuni's younger brother, Omri Akunis, is also politically active for the Likud and campaigns against BDS .

Political opinions

Akunis has spoken out against the implementation of the two-state solution on several occasions and has stressed that a Palestinian state would lead to a reign of terror from ISIS and Hamas . He regularly visits settlements in the West Bank and points out their strategically important location for the security of Israel. In February 2016 he declared, based on the international criticism of the settlement building: "No people are giving up their own land!"
