Oh Junggeun ( Korean 오정근 ) (born September 27, 1970 in Seoul / South Korea ) is a South Korean painter. He lives and works in Berlin .
biography
Oh Junggeun studied Fine Arts at Seoul National University . During his studies, he worked as a teacher at the Sun-Hwa University of the Arts in Seoul and as a lecturer in fine arts at Wonkwang University in Iksan . In 2004 he moved to Berlin, where he has lived and worked with his family ever since.
plant
Oh began his painting practice creating photorealistic paintings and elaborate woodcuts. In his early work he dealt intensively with the Korean War , in which his father served as a soldier on the South Korean side.
Gaps
Since Oh has been living in Berlin, he has been developing his series of works “Between Spaces”, in which he draws the structures that outline the outer lines of well-known buildings in the city (e.g. the Brandenburg Gate , Reichstag building , Potsdamer Platz ) in the sky as minimalized and abstract forms brings the canvas. Here he applies up to 12 layers of paint. His small-format photo overpaintings represent, so to speak, the starting point for the more abstract medium and large-format oil paintings.
