Ohrenschmaus is the third studio album by the German folk rock band Ougenweide .
It was released by Polydor in 1976 and re-released by Bear Family Records in 2006 .
General
The release of the album Ohrenschmaus marks the national breakthrough and thus one of the highlights in Ougenweide's work. They not only set given verses by old German masters to music, but also wrote their own, medieval -looking texts. Above all, Olaf Casalich succeeded in creating stylish “old German” songs that became the most famous of the band. This is underlined by dense arrangements and an abundance of instruments, some of them medieval, which are not in use today.
Several newly set original texts from the Middle Ages are included on the album. The oldest text that the band set to music dates back to the 9th century and is directed against worm infestation in horses. Also Walther's late work Owe how jæmerlîche ... in which he complained about the decline of morals, can be found on the album, as well as a text by Neidhart : rumet uz schäemel and stüele , a rather bawdy dance song.
In between there are songs written and composed by the band. Stories are told of Bald Anders, a character from the time of the Thirty Years' War , of Schlemihl , a text in the tradition of Yiddish songs by a person who sells his shadow, of the sufferings during a visit to the bathhouse and of the joys of following of defloration ( Come, you maids, help me complain ).
The release was followed by the band's first major tour, which took them to the Berlin Philharmonic .

Others
- The characteristic electric guitar hook line used in the song Der Schlemihl can be found on the 1984 LP Chaconne by the British group The Home Service . This is unusual as musical influences tend to be translated from English into German.
- The title of the album is to be understood as an analogy to the band name. In addition to the “feast for the eyes”, a “feast for the ears” is offered.
