description

Oktyabrskaya platform hall

The station is 40 meters underground and is laid out parallel to the garden ring under which it is located. The name of the station derives from the former name of the square at the intersection of the garden ring with the " Lenin-Prospekt " arterial road . Like many other streets and squares in the former Soviet Union, it was named in memory of the October Revolution and was therefore called Oktyabrskaya ploschtschad , literally “October Square”, until the 1990s . The square is now called Kaluschskaja ploschtschad (" Kalugaer Platz"), but the metro station has not been named otherwise until today. However, until 1961 it was called Kalushskaya after the historical place name - in 1974 this name was given to another station on the Kalushsko-Rishskaya line further out of town .

The Oktyabrskaya station has an entrance that is located on the outer garden ring side in a vestibule building. At the same time, it offers a transfer option to the station of the same name on the “orange” Kalushsko-Rishskaya line, the vestibule of which is diagonally opposite on the inner garden ring side. The Gorky Park on the banks of the Moskva River and the historic Jakimanka district, which is a listed area south of the Moskva River ( Samoskvoretschje ), are within walking distance of Oktyabrskaya . There is also a historic tram depot near Oktyabrskaya , which is still in operation today.

architecture

The vestibule building, similar to that of the Kurskaya-Kolzewaya , is designed in the style of a triumphal arch , which can be recognized in particular by the richly ornamented arched portals inside the building. There is the counter hall with access barriers , from which escalators lead to the platform. The platform itself is an optically three-part central platform , in the central area of which several stairs lead to the direct transition to the Kaluschsko-Rishskaya line. The middle platform hall is separated from the track area by a series of massive pylons made of brownish-white marble . Decorative torch-shaped candlesticks are attached to the pylons in pairs. The arched vault is decorated with embossed reliefs, which are thematically dedicated to the heroic deeds of Soviet soldiers in World War II. The floor of the platform hall is made of dark red and gray granite .

At the western end of the central hall there is an unusual architectural composition that is somewhat reminiscent of an altar in an early Catholic church: there is a portal that is closed by a decorative cast-iron gate, and behind this gate a hollow space opens up to the viewer that appears to be illuminated azure blue from above and therefore creates the illusion of colorful daylight at first glance. The author of this composition was the architect Leonid Polyakov, who also directed the construction of the entire platform hall of the Oktyabrskaya-Kolzewaya. While he himself referred to the "altar" merely as a means to make the general appearance of the underground station appear as less "underground" as possible, the composition was interpreted by some of his contemporaries as a symbol for the "carefree ( communist ) future". Polyakov received the Stalin Prize for the Oktyabrskaya project he realized .

Others

The vestibule of Oktyabrskaya was closed on January 2, 2010 for a general overhaul for several months. During the renovation work on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m., it was only possible to change from Oktyabrskaya on the Kolzewaya line to Oktyabrskaya on the Kalushsko-Rishskaya line, but not in the opposite direction. Access to the latter was also limited due to capacity reasons - on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. only exiting was possible.

The reopening of access, which u. a. received new escalators and ticket barriers took place on November 15, 2010.
