Career as a soccer player

Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt

Backasch began his career as a soccer player in 1972 in the children's team of the company sports association (BSG) Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt. After he had gone through all the youth teams and completed his apprenticeship as a locksmith, he was taken over as a striker in the first men's team for the 1984/85 season, which at that time played in the second-rate GDR league . Until 1988, the 1.81 m tall Backasch was usually used in attack, in the 1988/89 season he had a regular place as a Libero . The BSG Stahl surprisingly finished this season as a climber in the league, Backasch had been called up in all 34 point games and scored five goals as a defensive player. In the league season 1989/90, the new coach Günter Reinke Backasch functioned as a full-back who missed only three point games in the GDR elite league without adjustment problems. Since the Eisenhüttenstadt team fought to stay in the league, Backasch was able to play first division football for another year in 1990/91. This time only used in 18 of the 26 league games, he played mainly as a right defender. The last GDR top division season served after the GDR football association's dissolution due to the turning point, in addition to determining the last GDR champions, as well as qualifying for the leagues of the DFB game operations . The BSG successor club Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl could not qualify for the professional leagues, but reached the final of the last GDR Cup competition in 1990/91. In the encounter between Hansa Rostock and FC Stahl, Backasch was called up in his regular position as right-back, but lost with his team 0: 1. It was his last competitive game for Eisenhüttenstadt after 19 years.

2. Bundesliga, amateur leagues

After a year-long interlude at the amateur league club FC Berlin , the successor club to the GDR record champions BFC Dynamo, Backasch joined the tennis Borussia Berlin team, which also played in the amateur league, in the summer of 1992. A year later he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga with Borussia. There he was only used regularly on matchday 27, usually as a midfielder. In total, he played 16 games in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1993/94 season, in which he scored two goals. At the end of the season, the Berliners relegated to the newly founded Regionalliga Nordost , where Backasch stayed with Borussia until 1996. In July 1996 he returned to Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl, with whom he also played in the Regionalliga Nordost until 2000.

As a hobby footballer, Backasch joined the Brandenburg state league club Neuzeller SV after his competitive sports career ended . There he was team captain for several years and became player-coach in 2009. In the 2010/2011 season he was part of the national league team.
